Caballero was started by a father and son duo in Colombia in 2011. Since then, Alejandro has taken over the shop management and operations in addition to being the lead designer, since the passing of his co-founder and father.
The Artisans
The makers of the shoe were born into shoe-making. The art and technique they used has been taught to them for over a generation. Knowing that I’m getting a shoe crafted by people who are masters of their craft feels great. Its a feeling that goes beyond the shoe, just to know that there is something you’re wearing that was hand-crafted with love, skill and a technique honed through a generation of practice.
The Photos
Their photos are so beautiful. I’ve said this in our previous post about Bark and Mill, but when you’re selling online, the quality of your photos will make or break your conversion rate. Especially when your products are such high quality, photos and videos are the only way of getting that message across to the customer. Check out the rest of the Caballero Chelsea Boot pictures.
Personal Touches
If you watch their youtube video you see the process of how each shoe gets created, polished, personalized, and shipped. I loved how near the end, when the shoe is ready to shop, the artisan who created the shoe inserts a personal message and a polaroid of themselves, showing you who it was that crafted this shoe for you.
Direct to Consumer
We love that this family-owned factory is selling direct to customers. They are not going through retailers or other brands, but selling their own. I love this because it keeps the artisans and their customer connected. Sometimes big-box retailers disintermediate the craftsman from their end-users and it’s a shame when the makers of the product are so in love with what they do. That love shouldn’t have a corporate middle-man.
